Why does Africa look smaller on maps
White supremacy on maps and how to protect black children
The answer might shock you but in all honesty, Africa looks smaller on maps because of white people’s low self esteem, hate, prejudice and racism.
This is the main reason behind the unnecessary and continued use of a biased sketch called the Mercator projection, which diminishes the true size of the breathtaking Mama Africa. There are two excuses used for justifying this sketch:
1 .That it was created to highligh the spread of christianity
2. It was only meant for navigation
But before we dig deeper into these 2 excuses, let us first lay down the foundation by defining a few terms that will prove helpful in our analysis.
- White supremacy
The belief that the white race is inherently superior to other races and that white people should have control over people of other races. - White Wash
To alter (something) in a way that favors, features, or caters to white people, such as to portray (the past) in a way that increases the prominence, relevance, or impact of white people and minimizes or misrepresents that of nonwhite people. - Miseducate
To educate (someone) in a poor, improper, or harmful manner.
Ladies and Gentlemen, at the heart of white supremacy, lies are bountiful about how the Caucasoid race is supposedly bigger, better and much more civilized than all the other races.
However, as time goes by, many of us including white people, have come to the realization that such claims are false, deceptive, null and utterly void. But one area of studies still perpetuates this narative quite openly. The art and science of cartography.
Mercator projection is the best examples that blends white supremacy, white washing and miseducation all in one.
This is a sktetch, wrongfuly refered to as a map, that was created by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator back in 1569. It grossly exaggerates countries northward and southward a certain point from the equator.
The resulting effect is a falsified projection that makes certain countries (white dominated) seem larger than their actual sizes and; more visually centered than what an accurate map would usually depict.
The excuses and the theories
First of all, the fact that there are two theories trying to justify this projection, is a huge red flag.
1. Created to highlight the spread of christianity
The first theory claims that Gerardus Mercator was commissioned by either the Duke of Juillers or the leader of the Catholic denomination then, to create a map that would show the spread of Christianity across the world.
To please the head of the Catholics, Mercator therefore decided to white supremify Europe, Canada, USA, Greenland and certain land masses northward the equator. Now, several questions naturally come up based on this explanation:
- Who was spreading the gospel to Antarctica since its size seems infinite in the Projection?
- What was the population of Antarctica in 1569
- How many Christians and churches were in Antarctica in 1569?
- Why didn’t Mercator balloon the size of Abyssinia now known as Ethiopia, one of the oldest Christian Kingdoms, country and population in the world to this day?
- Why was Abyssinia left out when they have maintained old books that Europeans took out from the bible, such as the book of Enoch and Jubilees, later found at Qumran?
- Why was the size of Ethiopia not enlarged yet they have the Solomonic lineage of the Amhara through Makeda (Queen of Sheba/ the South), that goes many centuries back before Mercator was even born?
2. It was only meant for navigation
The Second theory claims that the projection was only supposed to be used for navigation. So what Mercator did…
